Mukesh Ambani has finally unleashed his triple play of carriage, content and commerce. At the 42nd AGM of Reliance Industries today, he unveiled the Jio Fiber, the much talked-about fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service.
Jio Giga Fiber will essentially offer lifetime free voice calls from landline phones and high speed broadband, besides free high definition TV and dish with minimum subscription of Rs 700 per month.
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, announced the launch of Jio's broadband internet services arm, JioFiber, at the 42nd annual general meeting of RIL. Jio has also become India's largest mobile network with 340 million subscribers. JioFiber will begin its commercial operations from 5 September, which also happens to be the third anniversary of Reliance Jio. In last year's AGM, Ambani had announced that Jio would be taking into consideration JioFiber internet services registrations from interested households and businesses across India. As a result, the company got registrations from 15 million homes from 1,600 towns which enabled Jio to plan to launch the services for 20 million residences and 15 million SMBs in these towns. Jio has been conducting trials of JioFiber services with 0.5 mn households and fine-tuning services based on real-time feedback. Average data use from these trial households has been 100 GB of data.
Services under the plan will be available at one-fifth to one-tenth of current global rates, Ambani announced.
Jio Fiber services will be started on a commercial basis from 5th September this year, which is the third anniversary of Reliance Jio.
The basic plan will start at 100 Mbps and go up to 1 Gbps. Jio Fiber plans will be priced between Rs 700 and Rs 10,000 per month. The cheapest data plan is priced at Rs 700 a month, and has speeds up to 100Mbps. The top-end plan comes at Rs 10,000 a month and provides access to broadband, Jio HomeTV and Jio's IoT.
Voice calls from home will be free forever, Ambani announced. The plan also features an unlimited international calling pack from Jio landline at Rs 500 per month, to US and Canada. Ambani also unveiled Jio Forever Plans under which users will get an HD or 4k LED television and 4k set-top box for free.
JioFibre plan will come bundled with subscriptions to most leading premium OTTs. "Also, for the first time in India, we are introducing a disruptive concept for watching new movies. Premium Jio Fiber customers will be able to watch movies in their living rooms the same day these movies are released in theatres," Ambani announced. This service - Jio First Day First Show - will be launched in mid-2020. The services features a wide range of applications, from digital TV to cloud gaming. Mixed reality (MR) startup Tesseract also featured prominently at the Reliance AGM, where Tesseract VR headset was displayed to the audience. The uses of mixed reality include movies, virtual shopping and education.
Ambani revealed that Jio Fiber's pre-service evinced interest from as many as 15 million people in 1,600 towns, adding that the plan is to reach more than 20 million homes and 15 million business establishments in those 1,600 towns. Jio's plan also involves tapping enterprise customers from businesses — both SMEs and big businesses. Jio Fiber will empower millions of small businesses with high-speed data, Ambani said. The company will also offer special mobility service for Jio Fiber users to deliver a platinum-grade service and product experience. Jio Postpaid Plus will offer priority SIM-setup service at home. It would also provide data and voice connectivity across all devices, both at home and outside, along with family plans and international roaming at a fraction of a cost. Jio's IoT platform will be commercially available starting January 1, 2020. "Jio aims to connect at least 1 billion of these (connected devices) on Jio's IoT platform. This translates into a Rs 20,000 crore per year revenue opportunity for Jio," he said. Over the last two years, the RIL AGMs have been a platform to showcase new and upcoming initiatives of the Group. Last year, speaking at the company's 41st AGM, Ambani had said the Jio Giga Fiber Service will provide ultra-high definition entertainment on TV, voice activated assistance, virtual reality gaming and digital shopping as well as smart home solutions.
JioFiber service internet speeds and tariff plans Ambani announced that JioFiber services would be offered internet services at speeds going from 100 Mbps all the way to 1 Gbps. The tariff plans would begin from Rs 700 and go up to Rs 10,000 per month depending on the plans you opt for.
